In order to collect tissue samples for the purpose of determining disease pathology, the endoscopic biopsy forceps are inserted into the gastrointestinal tract via a flexible endoscope. Four different forceps configurations are offered to meet a range of clinical requirements, including tissue collection.

Reusable and disposable biopsy forceps are both widely available for use in gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy units. Biopsy forceps, the most frequently used accessories in GI endoscopy are complex, pliable, and designed to accommodate the bends and twists of the contouring of the patient’s GI tract. Oval cup biopsy forceps have long and/or small-diameter lumens, with rough or textured surfaces and deep grooves or crevices, and are composed of porous materials and constructed with hinges or other features that may interfere with cleaning. Reusable devices must be designed to function safely and effectively following sterilization in a healthcare setting. By definition, they must be designed to withstand multiple exposures to sterilants or disinfectants. The number of exposures to which the device can be subjected without losing the ability to function effectively will help determine its useful life. During the last decade, endoscopic accessories have evolved from reusable to disposable in many parts of the world. Although this helps reduce the potential risk of cross-contamination and spread of infection, there remains the factor of cost. Major concerns for reuse of endoscopic accessories center on two main areas: first, and most important, is sterility and second is the capability of the equipment to perform its function satisfactorily after repeated uses and sterilizations. This Review offers an effective strategy for this common problem.
