The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month each year. People engage in various festivities on this day.
The most widely accepted origin story of the Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the ancient great poet Qu Yuan. According to legend, Qu Yuan, after being slandered and exiled, chose to drown himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month as a demonstration of his loyalty. To honor him, people hold dragon boat races and eat zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) among other celebratory activities.
During the Dragon Boat Festival, in addition to dragon boat races, people enjoy special foods, including zongzi, duck eggs, and braised shrimp. The most famous of these foods is zongzi, made from glutinous rice and various fillings wrapped in bamboo leaves or other plant leaves, then steamed or boiled. This food not only tastes delicious but also carries deep cultural significance.
Moreover, during the festival, people wear colorful silk threads woven into auspicious charms called "changminglǚ" (longevity threads) around their chests for good fortune. This traditional custom is especially popular in southern China.
